Message: “Disciples of Christ”
Scripture Reading: Matthew 4:19-20
Followers of Christ were first called Christians at Antioch. The term was not intended to be complimentary, but rather derisive and critical of those whose lifestyle reflected a belief in Jesus by their actions and words. Christians were persecuted during those days with arrests, imprisonment, and even death. An amazing thing happened during this time–the kingdom of God grew as many people trusted Christ each day.
Today’s world witnesses a return to the persecution of “Christians” through public criticism, dismissal from occupations, arrests and even death in certain countries. The U.S.A. is not exempt from such persecutions for one’s Christian faith. It seems we can talk about ever subject and other religions in our schools, but not Christ. This is a sign of the times!
One thing is certain, the term “Christian” has been cheapened by its common usage to identify someone who is not Islamic, Jewish, Hindu, etc. regardless of what they believe. It catagorizes anyone who is liberal or conservative; who believes in abortion or the value of human life, who believes the word of God or not; or who attends church or not. The world has removed any standards for what a Christian is.
The Lord knows his people. (John 10:27) They are the ones who are saved by faith in Christ Jesus. (John 3) They are the ones who trust every word of Christ and live in such a way as to reflect his love and sacrifice. Surrendered to Jesus and daily serving him with attitudes, actions, and language that reveals their faith and godliness. In spite of what others will say or do, these disciples belong to Jesus. Do YOU?
